What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students match each person to an invention or improvement and explain how it helped people. They use names, pictures, and simple cause-and-effect statements.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student links Bell with the telephone, Edison with practical electric lighting, and Morgan with the traffic signal or safety hood. The student explains one way each contribution changed daily life.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think Edison invented electricity or the first light bulb. They may confuse Morgan’s traffic signal with a modern stoplight or assume Bell invented modern smartphones.
How to Assess It
- Show pictures of a telephone, electric light, and three-position traffic signal. Students write or say each inventor’s name and one benefit of the contribution.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs picture cards of the telephone, electric light, traffic signal, and safety hood to sort under each inventor’s name.
Ask, “Which contribution changed daily life most?” and have students name the inventor, the contribution, and one reason.
Play a three-corner matching game by showing an invention card, then having students move to Bell, Edison, or Morgan.
Study photos of a phone, classroom lights, and a nearby traffic signal, then explain how each contribution still affects daily life.
