What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students name major discoveries, inventions, scientists, and inventors from different societies and time periods. They connect each example to changes in health, travel, communication, work, or daily life.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can match a person with a discovery or invention and explain its effect. They can also tell the difference between discovering something that exists and creating a new tool or process.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat discoveries and inventions as the same thing. They may mix up people and their contributions, or assume every innovation had only positive effects.
How to Assess It
- Use an exit ticket: Choose penicillin, the printing press, or the compass. Name the person or society connected to it and explain one way it changed the world.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs cards showing people, contributions, and effects, then have them build correct sets and defend each match.
Ask students to write which changed daily life more, the printing press or penicillin, using two specific effects as evidence.
Play a four-corner game labeled Discovery, Invention, Scientist, and Inventor, then read examples for students to classify.
Have students inspect a smartphone and trace three features, such as GPS, cameras, or batteries, to earlier discoveries and innovations.
