What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students match scientists and inventors to their discoveries, inventions, or improvements. They explain how each contribution changed work, health, communication, or daily life.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can identify people such as Jonas Salk, Cyrus McCormick, Bill Gates, and Louis Pasteur from clues about their work. The student can state each contribution and describe one effect it had.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse the person who created something with someone who later improved or popularized it. They may also mix up Salk and Pasteur, or assume Gates invented the computer.
How to Assess It
- Give students four names and four contribution cards to match. Ask them to choose one person and write, "This contribution changed life by..."

Have students inspect a vaccine record, food label, computer, or farm tool image and connect it to one featured person.
