2.13 is a TEKS knowledge and skills statement. These are the student expectations under it.

What Students Need to Do

Students compare tools and inventions used long ago with those used now. They describe how these changes affect travel, communication, play, and how people get food, water, clothing, and shelter.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can compare a letter with a text message or a wagon with a car and name a clear effect. The student can explain how a refrigerator keeps food safe or how indoor plumbing provides water.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume every new invention completely replaced older tools or made life better for everyone. They may confuse basic needs with wants, such as treating video games or phones as needs.

How to Assess It

Show pictures of a well, faucet, letter, and phone. Ask students to choose one pair and write two sentences explaining what changed and how it affected daily life.

   Sort picture cards showing old and modern tools, then match each pair and explain how daily life changed.

   Write about one invention you would miss for a week and explain which daily activities would become harder.

   Play invention charades, then have classmates name whether each tool changed travel, messages, play, or basic needs.

   Interview an older family member about a childhood tool, then compare its use with a tool used today.
