5.5 is a TEKS knowledge and skills statement. These are the student expectations under it.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use patterns, measurements, and cause-and-effect evidence to explain observations and solve problems. They model connected parts, track matter and energy, link form to job, and predict change when conditions shift.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can study a system, label its parts, and explain how changing one part affects the others. The student supports a prediction with measurements, observed patterns, or evidence from a model.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse a repeated pattern with proof that one event caused another. They may think matter disappears, energy and matter are the same, or one system part can change without affecting other parts.
How to Assess It
- Give students a pond food web and ask them to predict what happens if insects decrease. Have them trace one matter pathway and support their prediction with two links from the diagram.
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Connect organism cards with yarn to build a food web, then remove one card and trace the effects through the system.
Show a bird beak and two tools, then ask students to explain how each shape helps it perform a specific job.
Play Pattern Detective by giving teams measurement tables and asking them to state the pattern, predict the next result, and explain why.
Check the classroom thermostat every hour, graph the readings, and explain how sunlight, open doors, or air conditioning affect temperature stability.
