What Students Need to Do

Students explain how a discovery or invention changed scientific work and affected people’s lives. They use reliable resources to investigate STEM careers, including job duties, training, tools, and workplaces.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students connect a specific discovery or solution to both a scientific advance and a change in society. They gather accurate career information from two sources and summarize it in their own words.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat every invention as a scientific discovery or describe only positive effects. They may confuse a STEM career with a school subject or trust the first website they find.

How to Assess It

Give an exit ticket: “Name one discovery or invention, explain one effect on science and one effect on society, then list one related STEM career.”

   Build and test bottle water filters, then discuss how water treatment innovations affect public health and scientific research.

   Write: “How did one medical, communication, or transportation innovation help society, and what new problems did it create?”

   Play a matching game with cards showing STEM careers, job duties, tools, training, and workplaces.
