What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify scientists and engineers and describe the work they do. They explain how a discovery, tool, or invention solves a problem or makes life safer or easier.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can connect Katherine Johnson with spaceflight calculations, Sally Ride with space research, and Ernest Just with cell research. They can give a clear example of how scientific work or an invention helps people.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think all scientists mix chemicals or that engineers only repair machines. They may confuse astronauts with scientists or name an invention without explaining the problem it solves.

How to Assess It

Give students an exit ticket with one scientist picture and one invention picture. Ask them to identify the person's work and write or draw how the invention helps people.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give teams index cards and tape to build a bridge for a toy car, then have them name who their design helps.

  2. Show photos of Katherine Johnson, Sally Ride, and Ernest Just, then ask students to tell what each person studied or helped accomplish.

  3. Play a matching game with scientist cards, job cards, and contribution cards, asking students to explain every match.

  4. Walk through the school to find a ramp, alarm, or water fountain, then discuss how science and engineering help people.
