What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how a discovery or designed solution changed scientific knowledge and people’s lives. They use reliable sources to investigate STEM careers, including job duties, tools, training, and workplaces.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given an example, students describe clear cause-and-effect links between an advance and its effects on science and society. They find and summarize career information from two named resources.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat discoveries and inventions as the same thing. They may name a benefit without explaining what changed or assume every innovation has only positive effects. They may copy career facts from one website without checking the source.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Choose one discovery or solution and write one impact on science and one impact on society. Name a related STEM career and one reliable research source.

Ways to Teach It
Build and test a gravel, sand, and cotton water filter, then chart links between filtration, water quality research, and public health.
Write how the microscope changed scientific knowledge and people’s lives, using one cause-and-effect sentence for each impact.
Play a card sort matching discoveries, innovations, societal impacts, STEM careers, and reliable places to research each career.
Interview a local engineer, meteorologist, programmer, or lab technician about a problem they solve, their tools, and their training.
