What Students Need to Do: Students connect a scientific finding or new solution to changes in later research and everyday life. They explain these links using clear cause-and-effect statements.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can explain how an example, such as a vaccine or water filter, changed scientific work and people's lives. They can identify benefits, drawbacks, and later developments.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat discoveries and inventions as the same thing. They may assume every impact is immediate and positive, or describe a product without explaining its effects.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Scientists discover that certain bacteria cause illness, then engineers create a low-cost water filter. Explain one impact on science and one on society.

Lesson moves

Give groups discovery, solution, and impact cards to arrange into cause-and-effect chains, then have them defend each connection.
Ask students to write: Which changed society more, the discovery of germs or the invention of vaccines, and why?
Run a matching relay where teams pair discoveries and solutions with their effects on research, health, communication, or safety.
Examine a school water fountain or filter, then map how knowledge about germs shaped its design and public health effects.
