What Students Need to Do: Students identify a scientific discovery or a designed solution. They explain how it changed scientific work and people's lives using clear cause-and-effect links.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can name a specific discovery or solution and describe at least two results. They connect one result to science and another to society.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse a scientific discovery with an invention or assume every new idea has only positive effects. They may describe what something does without explaining how it caused change.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Scientists discovered that some diseases are caused by germs. Explain one way this changed scientific work and one way it changed daily life.

Lesson moves

Build a simple water filter with gravel, sand, and a coffee filter, then explain how cleaner-water designs affect communities.
Write about germ theory: How did discovering germs change both medical research and everyday habits such as handwashing?
Sort cards into discovery, solution, science impact, and society impact, then match each cause-and-effect set.
