Texas TEKS 2.7

2.7 is a TEKS knowledge and skills statement. These are the student expectations under it.

  explain how objects push on each other and may change shape when they touch or collide

  plan and conduct a descriptive investigation to demonstrate how the strength of a push and pull changes an object's motion.

What Students Need to Do

Students describe what happens when objects touch, push, pull, or collide. They notice changes in movement, location, and shape. They plan and carry out a simple test comparing gentle and strong forces.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can explain why a toy car moved farther after a stronger push and why clay flattened during a collision. The student can keep the starting point and materials the same, record results, and describe a pattern.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think only living things exert forces, or that an object must keep being pushed to keep moving. They may assume every collision changes shape permanently, or compare force strength while changing the surface or starting point.

How to Assess It

Give students a toy car, a taped starting line, and a clay block. Have them compare gentle and strong pushes, record what changes, and explain the collision.

   Roll toy cars into clay from one fixed starting line, then compare movement and dents after gentle and strong pushes.

   Ask, "How can two objects change each other when they meet?" Students draw one example and write two observation sentences.

   Play Push Prediction: show a gentle or strong force card, then students predict, test, and score accurate motion descriptions.

   Study soccer kicks, shopping carts, and car bumpers, then identify the contact force and each visible change.
