What Students Need to Do
- Students predict whether a magnet will interact with different classroom objects, then test each prediction. They describe how magnets can pull objects closer or push another magnet away.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student correctly sorts objects by whether a magnet attracts them and uses test results to explain the sorting. The student can demonstrate and predict a magnetic push or pull.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think magnets attract every metal object or every nearby object. They may also think magnets can only pull, or that larger magnets are always stronger.
How to Assess It
- Give each student a magnet, paper clip, craft stick, plastic button, and second magnet. Ask the student to predict each interaction, test it, then demonstrate one push and one pull.

Ways to Teach It
Set up a magnet test tray with coins, foil, clips, blocks, buttons, and fabric for students to predict, test, and sort.
Ask students to draw one object a magnet pulled and explain what happened using the words predict, push, or pull.
Play Magnet Match by having students pair picture cards showing objects with cards labeled attracted or not attracted.
Examine a magnetic cabinet latch, then have students explain how the magnet helps keep the door closed.
