What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students predict and test how pushes and pulls affect an object's motion. They explain how force can make an object start, stop, speed up, slow down, or change direction.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students plan a simple test with a toy or classroom object, state a prediction, and describe what happened. They correctly connect the type or strength of force to the change in motion.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think objects move without a push or pull, or that a moving object stops for no reason. They may also confuse speed changes with direction changes.

How to Assess It

Give each student a toy car and ask, "How can you make it change direction? Predict, test your idea, and explain what the force did."

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use toy cars and ramps to test how gentle and strong pushes change distance, speed, and direction.

  2. Ask students to draw and label one push and one pull that changed an object's motion.

  3. Play Force Challenge cards asking pairs to make a ball start, stop, speed up, slow down, or turn.

  4. Observe playground swings, doors, wagons, and balls, then identify the pushes and pulls that change their motion.
