What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students make a simple plan to test what happens when they push or pull an object. They predict the motion, carry out the test, and record what they observe. They compare the prediction and result using words such as start, stop, faster, slower, and turn.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can choose one action to test and state a clear prediction. The student runs the test safely and explains how the object's motion changed. The explanation matches the observation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think pushes only make objects move forward and pulls only make them move backward. They may believe moving objects stop only when someone touches them. They may also confuse speed with direction.
How to Assess It
- Give each student a toy car and ask, "What could you do to make this car turn?" Have the student predict, test, and describe the result.

Ways to Teach It
Use toy cars, blocks, and tape lines to test gentle and strong pushes on the same floor surface.
Ask students to draw and label how a pull could make a moving object stop, speed up, slow down, or turn.
Play Motion Challenge by naming a motion change, then having pairs demonstrate it with a ball and explain their push or pull.
Observe playground swings, doors, wagons, and balls, then list the pushes and pulls that change each object's motion.
