What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students develop and answer questions that clarify what a speaker says. They listen for information that is missing or unclear.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student asks a focused question and answers another accurately. The clarified idea can be restated.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may repeat the speaker’s words or ask an unrelated question. They may avoid asking when confused.
How to Assess It
- Give a short spoken message with one unclear detail. Ask the student to pose a clarification question and answer a peer’s question.
