What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students ask and answer questions to evaluate a speaker’s viewpoint. They add appropriate detail and explanation to their responses.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student identifies the viewpoint, asks a focused evaluative question, and answers with a reason or example. Elaboration remains tied to the speaker’s message.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may evaluate delivery instead of viewpoint. They may ask only factual recall questions or give unsupported agreement.
How to Assess It
- Play a brief opinion statement. Ask students to identify the viewpoint, pose one evaluative question, and answer with detail.
