What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students ask and answer questions that clarify a speaker’s message and identify the speaker’s point of view. They listen for what the speaker thinks and why.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student asks a focused clarification question and answers accurately. The student states the speaker’s viewpoint using something the speaker said.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse the speaker’s view with their own. They may ask an unrelated question or identify topic instead of viewpoint.
How to Assess It
- Play a brief opinion statement with one unclear detail. Ask students to clarify it and identify the speaker’s viewpoint.
