What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students develop and answer questions about a speaker’s message. They agree or disagree with the speaker’s viewpoint and give reasons.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student asks a relevant question and answers accurately. The student states agreement or disagreement with a clear reason tied to what the speaker said.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may disagree with the person rather than the point. They may state an opinion without a reason or ask an unrelated question.
How to Assess It
- Play a one-minute opinion statement. Ask students to write one question, answer it, and agree or disagree with one reason.
