What Students Need to Do: Students connect a text with their own lives, other texts, and the world. They share a specific similarity, difference, or related experience.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student names a clear connection tied to a text detail. With prompting as needed, the student explains how the connection relates.
Common Misconceptions: Students may tell an unrelated personal story. They may name a broad shared topic without explaining what connects.
How to Assess It: After a read-aloud, ask the student to complete, This reminds me of ___ because ___. Accept a self, text, or world connection.

Lesson moves

Link a read-aloud detail to self, another book, or world picture cards with yarn.
Ask students what part reminds them of something they know or experienced.
Play Connection Sort with simple text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world examples.
