What Students Need to Do: Students connect a text with their lives, other people, other texts, or the world. They explain how the connection adds understanding.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student describes a specific similarity or difference tied to the text. The student explains how the connection clarifies a character, event, idea, or fact.
Common Misconceptions: Students may share a related topic without connecting details. They may focus on personal experience and stop discussing the text.
How to Assess It: Ask students to make one text-to-self, text-to-text, or text-to-world connection and explain it using a detail from the reading.
