What Students Need to Do: Students recognize genres and connect texts with other texts, ideas, cultures, time periods, and personal events. They explain meaningful similarities, differences, or relationships.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student identifies a genre using relevant features and makes a specific connection. The explanation shows how the connection improves understanding or interpretation.
Common Misconceptions: Students may label genre by topic alone. They may mention a broad similarity without connecting details or acknowledging cultural and historical context.
How to Assess It: Give a familiar text. Ask students to name its genre, cite one feature, and explain one connection to another text, culture, era, or experience.
