What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use established criteria to evaluate text quality. They connect a text with other works, ideas, cultures, eras, and personal experiences to deepen the evaluation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student applies the same relevant criteria consistently and supports each judgment with evidence. A specific connection clarifies the text’s value, limits, or meaning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may substitute enjoyment for quality criteria. They may make broad cultural, historical, or personal connections without explaining their relevance.
How to Assess It
- Provide a text and agreed criteria for clarity, evidence, and craft. Ask students to evaluate it and explain one connection that informs the judgment.
