What Students Need to Do
- Students apply established criteria to categorize texts and make informed quality judgments. They connect texts with other works, ideas, cultures, eras, and personal experiences.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student evaluates a text with stated criteria and evidence rather than preference alone. The student makes a specific connection that deepens the judgment or interpretation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call a text good because they enjoyed it. They may categorize by topic only or make a connection unrelated to the criteria.
How to Assess It
- Provide a text and a three-part quality checklist. Ask students to rate it with evidence and explain one meaningful cultural, historical, textual, or personal connection.
