What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose and develop criteria for judging text quality. They apply those criteria while connecting texts to other works, ideas, cultures, eras, and experiences.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student designs criteria suited to text type, purpose, and audience, then applies them consistently. Evidence and meaningful connections support a nuanced judgment.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose criteria that merely reflect personal taste. They may change criteria after seeing results or use connections unrelated to quality.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to create three criteria for a given text type, apply them to one text, and explain a connection that informs the evaluation.
