What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use established criteria to judge text quality. They connect texts with other works, ideas, cultures, eras, and experiences as part of an informed evaluation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student applies criteria consistently and cites evidence for a nuanced judgment. Connections help explain quality, perspective, relevance, or craft instead of replacing analysis.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may rank texts by personal preference alone. They may force a connection that does not affect the quality judgment or interpretation.
How to Assess It
- Give two texts and agreed criteria for credibility, clarity, and craft. Ask students to evaluate one and explain a meaningful connection that informs the judgment.
