What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose and develop criteria for evaluating text quality. They make connections across texts, ideas, cultures, eras, and experiences to support informed judgments.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student creates criteria suited to genre, purpose, audience, and evidence demands. The evaluation applies them consistently and uses contextual connections without reducing quality to preference.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may design criteria that guarantee a favored result. They may treat cultural difference as a defect or make broad historical connections without textual evidence.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to develop a short rubric for a chosen genre, apply it to one text, and explain how one contextual connection affects the judgment.
