What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students recognize genres and connect texts with other works, ideas, cultures, eras, events, and experiences. They use genre features and specific details to explain each connection.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student identifies genre from structural or stylistic evidence and makes a meaningful connection. The explanation shows how culture, history, another text, or experience informs interpretation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may label genre from topic or length alone. They may make a broad connection without textual details or flatten cultural differences.
How to Assess It
- Give a familiar text. Ask students to identify its genre with one feature and explain one evidence-based connection to another text, culture, era, or experience.
