What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students retell a story or share important details from an informational text. They use pictures, words, or oral language to show what they understood.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student recounts major story events in a sensible order or names key facts from a text. The response stays connected to the book rather than personal experience alone.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name only a favorite picture or isolated detail. They may retell with invented events or give a personal story instead of information from the text.
How to Assess It
- After a read-aloud, ask the student to retell the story with three picture cards or share two important facts from the text.
