What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the main topic or central idea and retell supporting details. They also summarize a selected part of a story or informational text.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student states what a text or section is mostly about and selects key details that support it. The retelling or summary keeps important information in a sensible order.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name a broad topic without stating the main idea. They may include minor details, personal opinions, or every event in the summary.
How to Assess It
- Read a short passage. Ask students to state its main topic or central idea, give two supporting details, and summarize one paragraph or scene.
