What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the main topic or central idea in literary and informational texts. They retell the important details that develop that idea in a sensible order.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student states what the text is mostly about rather than naming one small detail. The retelling includes the most important events or information and leaves out unrelated or minor points.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name a character or subject as the main idea without saying what the text shows about it. They may retell every detail or omit the event that resolves the story.
How to Assess It
- Read a short text aloud. Ask the student to state the main topic or idea and retell three important details in order.

Ask, ‘What is this text mostly showing, and which three details matter most?’
