What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students determine a theme or central idea and explain how key details support it. They summarize the text accurately and concisely.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student states a theme as a message or a central idea as a complete thought. The student selects supporting details and writes a summary with the most important information.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse topic with theme or central idea. They may copy sentences, include minor details, or add opinions instead of summarizing.
How to Assess It
- Give a short text. Ask students to state its theme or central idea, cite two supporting details, and summarize it in four sentences.
