What Students Need to Do: Students determine a theme or central idea and analyze how it develops across a literary or informational text. They also write an accurate, objective summary.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student states the theme or central idea as a complete, defensible thought. The student traces how key moments shape it and summarizes the text without commentary, minor details, or distorted emphasis.
Common Misconceptions: Students may choose a broad topic or familiar moral before considering the whole text. They may describe isolated details instead of development, or let opinions and analysis enter the summary.
How to Assess It: Give students a short text and ask for one central idea, three details showing its development, and a four-sentence objective summary.
