What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students determine one or more themes or central ideas and analyze how each develops across a text. They track relationships among ideas and produce an accurate, objective summary.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student distinguishes related themes or central ideas and traces the details that develop each one. The summary preserves the text's main emphasis without personal judgment, analysis, or unnecessary detail.

Common Misconceptions

Students may combine distinct ideas into one vague theme or treat every repeated topic as central. They may analyze in the summary, omit an important strand, or give minor details equal weight.

How to Assess It

Give students a text with two related central ideas. Ask them to trace one detail for each idea and write a concise objective summary including both.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use two colored threads to connect detail cards to separate but related central ideas across a text timeline.

  2. Ask, ‘How do these two central ideas develop separately, and where do they influence each other?’

  3. Play Summary Balance by revising summaries that overemphasize one idea or include commentary and minor details.

  4. Analyze a documentary transcript with two central ideas, then write a neutral program description reflecting both.
