What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students determine a theme in literature or a central idea in informational text. They trace how key details develop that idea across the text and write an accurate summary.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student states a defensible theme or central idea rather than a one-word topic. The student explains how selected details build it over time and summarizes the text without opinions or minor distractions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name a topic as the theme or choose a lesson unsupported by the ending. They may list events instead of tracing development, or fill a summary with quotations and personal reactions.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short text and ask for one theme or central idea, two developmental details in order, and a three-sentence objective summary.

Ways to Teach It
Arrange event or detail cards along a theme-development line, labeling how each card adds, shifts, or confirms meaning.
Ask, ‘Where does the central idea first appear, and which later detail develops it most?’
Play Topic, Theme, or Summary by sorting statements and revising any item placed in the wrong category.
Trace the central idea in a news article, then write a neutral briefing for someone who has not read it.
