What Students Need to Do: Students determine a theme or central idea and explain how details support it. They summarize a section without adding unrelated information or opinion.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student states a defensible theme or central idea and cites key details that develop it. The summary includes major events or ideas in a clear order.
Common Misconceptions: Students may give a one-word topic instead of a theme or central idea. They may retell every detail or insert a personal reaction into the summary.
How to Assess It: Give a short story or article. Ask students to state its theme or central idea, cite two supporting details, and write a three-sentence summary.
