Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students identify people or characters, places, and major story events. In informational text, they identify important pieces of information.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student correctly names a character, setting, and important event from a familiar story. For nonfiction, the student points to or states a key fact.
Common Misconceptions: Students may name something visible in an illustration that is not important to the text. They may confuse the setting with the character or include an invented event.
How to Assess It: After a short read-aloud, ask the student to identify who, where, and one important event or fact, using pictures for support.
