What Students Need to Do
- In literature, students analyze how structural choices create meaning and affect readers. In informational text, they analyze how authorial intent shapes sentences, paragraphs, and sections.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student explains how ordering, pacing, shifts, or section design produces a specific effect. The analysis links local choices to the text’s purpose or larger meaning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may label structure without explaining its effect on readers. They may claim intent from personal opinion rather than language, placement, and development in the text.
How to Assess It
- Give a text with a clear structural shift. Ask students to analyze how one sentence, paragraph, or section serves the author’s intent and changes meaning.
