The Standard
Analyze how and why individuals, events, and ideas develop and interact over the course of a text. In literary texts, analyze how complex and/or dynamic characters develop, interact with other characters, advance the plot, or develop a theme. (RL) In informational texts, analyze how the author unfolds an analysis or argument, including the sequence, the introduction and development of ideas, and the connections that exist. (RI)

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students analyze how people, events, and ideas develop and interact across a text. In literature, they trace complex characters, plot, and theme; in nonfiction, they examine how analysis or argument unfolds.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student builds a coherent explanation across multiple moments rather than isolating one detail. Evidence shows how interactions advance plot, develop theme, or connect an argument’s ideas.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may summarize a sequence without analyzing why development occurs. They may label a character dynamic or an argument organized without tracing changes and connections.
How to Assess It
- Give a substantial excerpt. Ask students to trace one character, idea, or event through three moments and analyze how the development shapes the whole.
