What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- In literature, students analyze how dialogue or events drive action, reveal character, or prompt decisions. In informational text, they analyze how people, events, and ideas connect and develop.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student traces a specific line or event to a later action, insight, or decision. For nonfiction, the student explains development and interaction across multiple details.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may summarize dialogue without analyzing its consequence. They may name informational relationships but not show how those relationships develop over the text.
How to Assess It
- Give a literary or informational excerpt. Ask students to trace how one line, event, or idea changes what follows, citing two connected details.
