What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students analyze how a particular sentence, paragraph, stanza, chapter, scene, or section fits the whole text. They explain its contribution to theme, central idea, setting, or plot.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student identifies a section’s structural role and traces its effect beyond the section itself. The analysis uses evidence from both the selected part and the larger text.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may summarize the section without explaining its function. They may claim it is important simply because it contains a major event or key fact.
How to Assess It
- Give a text with one marked paragraph or stanza. Ask students to explain where it fits structurally and how it develops theme, central idea, setting, or plot.
