What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- In literature, students analyze how structure and genre features develop themes or central ideas. In informational text, they analyze organization and how sections contribute to the whole.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student identifies a structural choice and explains its effect on development and meaning. The analysis connects a section or genre feature to the text’s larger theme or central idea.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name chronological, flashback, or cause-and-effect structure without analyzing its function. They may summarize sections separately instead of explaining how they build the whole.
How to Assess It
- Give a text with two clearly structured sections. Ask students to explain how each section and the order between them develop a theme or central idea.
