The Standard
In literary texts, and informational texts, compare and contrast the structures of two or more texts in order to analyze how the differing structure of each text contributes to overall meaning, style, theme or central idea.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare structures in two or more literary or informational texts. They analyze how each structure shapes meaning, style, theme, or central idea.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student identifies relevant structural similarities and differences with evidence. The analysis explains how organization, pacing, sectioning, or genre choices create different effects.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may compare topics instead of structures. They may name structural features but not connect them to each text’s meaning or style.
How to Assess It
- Give two short texts on a shared topic with different structures. Ask students to compare one structural choice and analyze its effect in each text.
