What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- In literature, students compare first-person and third-person narration across stories. In informational text, they compare a primary and secondary source about the same topic or event.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student cites pronouns, access to thoughts, or narration details when comparing viewpoints. The student distinguishes firsthand evidence from a later account and explains an important difference.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may identify point of view from a single pronoun without checking who narrates. They may assume a primary source is always more accurate or complete.
How to Assess It
- Provide two brief story excerpts or paired sources. Ask students to identify each perspective or source type and explain one meaningful difference.
