What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- In literature, students analyze how an author develops and contrasts narrators’ or characters’ viewpoints and perspectives. In informational text, they analyze how an author separates a position from others.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student identifies distinct viewpoints and traces how details, language, or selection of evidence develop them. The student explains a meaningful contrast and its effect.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse a character’s perspective with the author’s position. They may state that views differ without analyzing how the text establishes the difference.
How to Assess It
- Give an excerpt presenting two perspectives or positions. Ask students to analyze one contrast and cite two choices that develop it.
