What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- In literature, students analyze how differences among narrator, character, audience, and reader perspectives create tone or mood. In nonfiction, they analyze how an author addresses conflicting evidence or viewpoints.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student identifies distinct perspectives and traces their effect with evidence. For nonfiction, the student evaluates how fairly and effectively the author acknowledges and responds to conflict.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat point of view and perspective as identical labels. They may note conflicting evidence without analyzing the author’s response or its effect.
How to Assess It
- Give a literary or informational excerpt with a clear perspective conflict. Ask students to analyze how the difference is handled and what effect it creates.
