What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

In stories, students compare characters, settings, or events using specific details. In informational text, they explain interactions among people, events, ideas, or concepts with evidence.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student explains meaningful similarities and differences between at least two literary elements. For nonfiction, the student traces how two subjects affect or relate to one another.

Common Misconceptions

Students may create two separate lists without making a comparison. They may name a relationship but omit evidence showing the interaction.

How to Assess It

Give a literary or informational passage. Ask students to compare two elements or explain one interaction, citing at least two relevant details.
