The Standard
In literary texts, describe character traits, motivations, or feelings, drawing on specific details from the text. In informational texts, describe the relationship among a series of events, ideas, concepts, or steps in a text, using language that pertains to time, sequence, and cause/effect.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- In stories, students describe character traits, motives, and feelings using specific details. In informational text, they explain relationships among events, ideas, concepts, or steps using sequence and cause language.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student supports a character description with actions, words, or thoughts from the story. For nonfiction, the student clearly explains how two events or ideas connect.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may label a character from one isolated action without evidence. They may list informational details without explaining time, sequence, or cause-and-effect relationships.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short literary or informational passage. Ask them to explain one character quality or one relationship, citing two specific details.
