What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

In literature, students trace how events unfold and how characters respond or change toward a resolution. In informational text, they analyze how people, events, and ideas are introduced and developed together.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student explains a character change through connected plot events and evidence. For nonfiction, the student traces relationships and development across several parts of the text.

Common Misconceptions

Students may summarize events without analyzing a character’s response or change. They may list informational subjects separately instead of explaining how they influence one another.

How to Assess It

Give a short literary or informational passage. Ask students to trace one development or relationship across at least two moments, citing evidence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Arrange event and response cards on a plot line or informational relationship map.

  2. Ask students which event or idea most changes what follows and why.

  3. Play Development Chain by connecting evidence cards with cause, response, change, or relationship links.

  4. Trace how a school decision affects different people and events over time.
