What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- In literature, students analyze how plot elements affect one another and contribute to meaning. In informational text, they analyze how people, events, and ideas are introduced, connected, and developed.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student explains how conflict, setting, turning point, and resolution interact to shape meaning. For nonfiction, the student traces a relationship across the text with relevant evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may label plot parts without analyzing their effects. They may summarize informational details in order but fail to explain connections or development.
How to Assess It
- Give a literary or informational excerpt. Ask students to analyze how two elements or subjects affect each other and the text’s meaning, citing evidence.
