In literary texts, explain how a series of chapters, scenes, or stanzas fits together to determine the overall structure of a story, drama, or poem. In informational texts, compare and contrast the overall structure in two or more texts using terms such as sequence, comparison, cause/effect, and problem/solution.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- In literature, students explain how chapters, scenes, or stanzas combine into an overall structure. In informational text, they compare structures such as sequence, comparison, cause-and-effect, and problem-solution across texts.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student explains how one literary section contributes to the whole work. The student accurately compares the organizational patterns and effects of two informational texts.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may summarize sections without explaining how they fit together. They may compare topics or features instead of overall structures.
How to Assess It
- Give two short texts or sections. Ask students to identify each structure and explain how a chapter, scene, stanza, or organizational pattern shapes the whole.
